Its two towers, separated from each other by one kilometer and three hundred meters, are ideally vertical, but nevertheless, they are 41 mm farther from each other at the tops than at the bases, due to the bending of the Earth's surface.

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which connects Staten Island and Brooklyn, was designed with the earth in mind. An accusation like, "Hey, your people recently thought the earth was flat, so why should we believe you now?" was published so often that it turned into some kind of historical fact! This led to the fact that the word "flat earth" became synonymous with the word "anti-scientific". The misconception that just a few centuries ago, a bunch of people believed that the Earth was flat, most likely arose in the modern era as some kind of insult. The Greeks just noticed that ships disappear behind the horizon from the bottom, and if you move, then to the North, then to the South, the stars appear and disappear from view. What if, in fact, gravity does not exist, the Earth is like a plate, and science was wrong? Since the days of the ancient Greeks, almost all scholars and Western religions have recognized the circularity of our planet.
That is why in outer space everything that is more than a few hundred kilometers in diameter is round. Something as massive as the Earth and shaped like a flat disk will naturally turn into a ball under the influence of its own gravity. This all of course ignores the fact that such a planetary shape is impossible. Thus, when a person goes over the edge, instead of falling out into space, he will be able to stand quietly, since there will be a level place. Remember, this is a flat Earth, but it will feel like a perpendicular slope, so instead of fearing falling off a cliff, on a flat Earth due to gravity, the greater risk is falling off the cliff and rolling back towards the center. And if a person goes from the center to the edge, then as he approaches the edge it will become more scary.

Houses would have to be built at a certain angle, so that it always seemed that the bottom was always at the right angle to the floor, as we feel it on our round Earth. But as you get closer to the edge, gravity on the disc-shaped Earth would gradually distort, pushing the body towards the center at a larger and larger angle. It is so? No! If the Earth had the shape not of a ball, but of a flat disk, like a plate, then with a suitable density and thickness, life in its center would feel quite normal. After all, otherwise the travelers would always be falling off its edge. Naturally the Earth is not flat, the Earth is round. In 2003, researchers conducted a study and found that Kansas is actually flatter than a pancake. When and where did it come from? The physics of a flat planet? Who are the most famous flat-earthers? Is it round or flat? You will find out the answers to these and other questions and try to understand the worldwide conspiracy. In the era of post-truth and globalized information, his work advises us to have a critical reflection on the conspiratorial power of images. For centuries, people have argued about the shape of our planet (some still argue), so let's figure it out and answer the main questions. Consequently, the whole work questions both the conspiratorial rhetoric and, more broadly, our relationship to the image. He questions the automatisms and stereotypes that inform his eye and, at the same time, ours. By combining the codes of documentary photography and asserted subjectivity, the author seems to be taking a resolutely reflexive path on his work.

Except that the author makes visible the marks of his plastic interventions, as so many clues of his work process. Stripped of their context and accompanied by concise legends, each of them could make us doubt about the rotation of the earth or the existence of gravity. By dint of manipulation, fragmentation, distortion and montage, he comes to make his own exhibits. To do so, he seizes the methods used by Rowbotham’s disciples and tries to demonstrate the same empirical experiences through images.
#ZETETIC ASTRONOMY GRAVITY SERIES#
He proposes to pinpoint a series of flat-earthers’ statements and to go through them with a fine-tooth comb with his creative and singular experience. In this hybrid project, Philippe Braquenier plunges into the heart of the discursive mechanisms of conspiracy theories. It was first published in the late 19th century and has since gathered a large community of followers whose views are being spread virally nowadays. Originally, "Zetetic Astronomy: Earth Not a Globe" is the title of a book written by Samuel Birley Rowbotham, the founding account of the theory that the earth is flat and not spherical.
